From Silence to Sound

Artist: Daisy Kemarre Moss

It’s in the dark, quiet places of the world that creations are born.

In the depths and in the stillness, as something slowly forms.

Often unrecognisable at first - what is this thing I’m building?

It starts with a rush of energy and then a lull, as this life form evolves under the surface. Taking shape in the inner world, before appearing in clear sight. A seed underground, before it breaks through to the light.

How often I can disregard an idea, as it flashes before my eyes in that initial impulse. Dismissing it, instead of acknowledging the invitation. See, ideas don’t visit us until we are capable and ready to bring them to life. Does that mean I take on every idea? No. I watch for the ones that stick around. The ideas that tug at my sleeve with a longing, the ones that send me signs.

I eventually decide to take a step towards this thing, that wants to play with me so bad. It clearly trusts me, but I have my doubts. I get all caught up in the how. The idea tells me to be quiet, to not get caught up in my mind. To listen for a minute, as it’s got some ideas of its own!

Writing a song starts with silence. A dance in stillness. A painting with a blank canvas. A meal with thin air.

When I’m looking at the void, deciding whether to build and feeling overwhelmed by the space that needs to be filled, can I ask myself- has the building already begun? Has the idea already started sprouting inside my inner world, the path already unfolding? Can I let the idea lead the way and simply ask- what can I do to help?

Maybe I’m just an instrument for this idea to move through- from silence to sound. Can I get out of the way- let it breathe, let it grow. I’m a witness and a co-creator, tending to the seed every day, knowing it has a life of its own.

How I Make Music

In this episode of Creative Wellbeing, I answer questions from my community on my creative process, specifically around making music. This isn’t a technical deep dive, but a sharing of my philosophies on creative living, that can be applied to all areas of life.
